Austin Brynjulvson Artist Profile Coeur d’Alene.

Austin Brynjulvson Coeur d'Alene

Austin Brynjulvson creates improvisational art inspired by his study of jazz music and his love for spontaneous free expression. During his BFA show at the University of Idaho he created a transitory sculpture focusing on the freedom of improvisation in sculptural art and the loss of opportunity for the viewer to fully experience the work.

It was a reflection on the difficulty the artist experiences when they must take down a work of art and ruin it because it is no longer needed. The loss the artist goes through is not commonly experienced by the viewer of their work, so the show emphasized bringing that context to the audience.

After graduating from his program in Fine Art at the University of Idaho, Brynjulvson was commissioned by the University to install his first permanent public sculpture piece in the commons above the food court. The Golden Ceiling is a large cloud like kinetic sculpture using strong visual rhythm and the effect of parallax to emulate the motion of the wind over the palouse hills. The billowing curves and light atmosphere of the piece creates a sense of opportunity for epiphany within the space.

After returning to Coeur d’Alene from his studies, Brynjulvson continues to seek out opportunities to create public works of art in his region.
