Lake Coeur d’Alene has a winter tradition that begins the Holiday Season.  The Bald Eagles invade the lake feeding on the spawning kokanee salmon.  The kokanee salmon is “landlocked” in lake CDA and the Bald Eagles know it.

.

The Bald Eagles come to lake Coeur d’Alene from northern lakes and rivers that freeze over in the winter.  The Eagles show up just to feed on the half million kokanee salmon.  This puts on a spectacular show for the people and their cameras.

.

Hitch a ride on the CDA resort site-seeing boats and get yourself right in the middle of the feeding frenzy.  Or just drive your car to Wolf Lodge Bay on the northeast side of Lake Coeur d’Alene.  Park, whip out your cameras and take great photographs.

When you arrive by boat or car you notice all the pine trees are full of what looks like golf balls.  Then you realize these are the bright white heads of the adult bald eagles.

.

The show goes on all day, every day.  With the massive bald eagles with a 6-foot wingspan dropping out of the sky and splash into the water to scoop up another kokanee salmon.  Quickly rising into the sky to its perch high up in the trees.  And the eagle feast begins.

If you get lucky you can see a team of eagles feasting on a floating deer carcass.  Yes, bald eagles are carnivores and the young deer that drown trying to swim across the lake become a meal.  The amazing opportunity to take great photos of this event is due to the fact the deer carcass will float.  So the eagles land on the animal like it’s a floating restaurant.  Ripping off chunks of meat until the boney carcass sinks to the bottom of the lake.

Before I moved to Coeur d’Alene I had never seen a bald eagle.  Thinking they were an endangered bird only found in zoos.  This is so far from the truth when you come to our beautiful lake in the winter season.  You will see hundreds of bald eagles in just a couple hours.  Amazing day if you get the chance to experience it.

.

Come to Coeur d’Alene and get a hotel.  And watch invasion of the Bald Eagles right before your very eyes!

.

Enjoy Coeur d’Alene.  Enjoy Bald Eagle Watching!
